D1Where we began
An shared intrest in music is how it all it all started. I had a broken record player. Nicho biked all over Oslo looking for parts. It was more complicated than we thought. We didn’t fix it. I even got an electric shock. But I remember laughing.
Nicho had a way of making even practical, frustrating things feel fun. I quickly understood that this was someone I wanted in my life.
D2
How it grew
Sonic Gastronomic began as a gift to Nicho. I didn't have much money, so I made some sketches for a cookbook and vinyl. Time felt more valuable than money.
What could have stopped there, kept growing as Nicho brought ideas to the table, and I felt the urge to see what they would look like. Becoming something we build together over time.
D3How we see
Looking at things from different sides became a theme. The cookbook with side A and B, just like the vinyl. The recipes share names with the songs. Kitchen tools double as instruments. A garage turns into a listening bar. Different, but somehow in sync.
When Japan feels far away, we look for traces of it where we already are. Sometimes walking around Oslo can feel like a mini vacation. When Nicho steals a coaster or peels off a label, I feel seen. I keep them as souvenirs in my journal.
D4
How we play
While Nicho has all the advanced kitchen tools, I tend to priorities buying things like panda-shaped rice moulds.
The Rhythm & Rice idea came from me dancing while Nicho was cooking. Also a little homage to Nicho who was the backbone of the school corps playing the rhythm egg growing up.
Nicho DJs a little on the side. I make playlists for everything. In Sonic Gastronomic there’s no audience. Just us. Here, I get to be the DJ too.
We used AI to test out ideas for music and illustrative animations. AI became a bit like a sampler. Something you borrow from, mix, rearrange and reshape until it becomes something different.
I haven’t replaced that broken record player. Something else grew from it. I used AI to generate the record player of my imagination. Mahogany against recycled textures. A contrast that feels both calm and energetic at the same time.
We pretty much dress the same. Buying gifts for each other is often just as much a gift for ourselves. For the kitchen collection we leaned into mechanic workwear, something we could easily imagine wearing ourselves.
D5Bringing it home
In the end, Sonic Gastronomic is about bringing inspiration home, from near and far, analogue and digital, taste and sound, and turning it into something that feels ours.
And that sometimes inspiration can come from dancing in the kitchen while your favorite person is cooking.
