FIELD TRIP REPORT

Reykjavik edition

Soundtrack Musical Postcard from Reykjavik ↗
(whatever was playing around me)

WorkN1 →

BackgroundI had just started working on a visual and communication direction for N1, one of Iceland’s largest companies in mobility, fuel, and energy services, when my boss Valli asked if I wanted to work from the Reykjavík office for two weeks.

I hesitated. But worst case, I get a little lonely? I get a little bored? Being bored in Reykjavík actually sounded kind of intriguing. And I’m to curious to say no to anything.

The brand concept I was working on was all about how life isn’t just about getting from A to B, but about the moments in-between.

So I said yes. No big plan. Just curious to explore whatever exitment and bordom Reykjavik day-to-day life had to offer.

PACKING

Essentials

Borrowed by brothers camera. Also brought my scanner. It’s my favourite toy at the moment.

MUSIC

Soundtrack

At first I wanted to make a playlist with only Icelandic artists. That didn’t really work. Felt too forced. Instead I just started shazaming whatever I heard around me. Didn’t really care about genre or structure. Made sense at the time.

The cover images are snapshots taken around the time and place I heard the music. Became a musical postcard I sent myself. A way to remember what was going on around me.

  1. Dart break at the office
  2. Locker room at Hvammsvik
  3. Fish soup at Hvammsvik
  4. Hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur
  5. Roadside limoncello at Hornid
  6. Poster spotted in the toilet queue at Hornid
  7. Secondhand shirt in a secondhand bag from Spúútnik
  8. Shooting hoops with Dagur and Gunnar
  9. Plane home

DOG

Pollux

With limited experience keeping a dog happy (and alive), I looked after Valli’s dog while he was off biking through Italy. It took us a few days to get in sync, he knew what he was doing. I didn’t. So I binge-watched a dog training show, just to understand his reactions.

We walked an hour and a half to two every day. It was nice. I genuinely enjoyed his company. I was never alone. Literally. Ever.

COLLEAGUES

Reykjavik office

...
  1. Dagur - borrowed his theeses book about the icelandic letters see more of his work ↗
  2. Björn - gifted me this icelandic sweather
  3. Anton - gave me this magasin on a stop to an art supplie shop we went to before going to ... for some chatting, drinks and doodles
  4. Agga Kid - tegning
  5. Hulda Sól - won the cool penal game (polarid)

GROCERIES

Bónus

Bought groceries at Bónus. The big pink pig is ugly-cool. It was fun for me. For “cheap” (nothing is cheap in Iceland), it was good. Ate breakfast in a greenhouse. Felt wholesome.

FOOD

Momo

ART

Sunna Dögg Ásgeirsdóttir

Møteinnkallelse
Agga + Una - pizza

Sunna Dögg Ásgeirsdóttir’s exhibition called Scent in 2D at Gallerí Grótta. Imaginary Friends is based on how her daughters experience the world. It felt personal and different. Looked like friends I would’ve liked.

SCULPTURE

Ásmundur Sveinsson

Went to Reykjavík Art Museum. The ticket got me into two other museums within 24 hours, so I hopped on a scooter to Ásmundarsafn an hour before closing. It was my favourite. Ásmundur Sveinsson designed, lived, and worked in the house. The exhibition was called Wonderland, his work shown with contemporary artist Halldór Ásgeirsson.

HOT SPRINGS

Hvammsvik

Boiled myself in the hot springs. Ate boiled seafood after. It was refreshing.

NATURE

Field work

Picked some flowers. Pressed and labeled a few. And dragged across my scanner just to see what happened. It was fun.

WORK

N1

The work went in another direction. Felt a little dissapointed.

THOUGHTS

P.O.V

Turned some thoughts around. Felt better.

ROADTRIP

Solo

Strókur
Gullfoss
Þingvellir
On my last day, I went on a road trip. Strokkur geysir was crazy. Gullfoss had an interesting history (Sigríður Tómasdóttir is worth reading about). Þingvellir was cool, it’s where the American and European continental plates crash and meet.

Snorri at the office gave me an insider tip: go a little later in the day. With the midnight sun, it would still be light, and almost no tourists. It was gray and raining, but cozy in the car. I listened to the music I’d collected over the weeks, and shamelessly sang my heart out.

FIELD TRIP

Report

When I let it, boredom, followed by curiosity, can take me to some unexpected places. It was indeed and memorable experience.
